timing belt

I recently bought my 1995 164 LS the engine was destroyed before when the last owner broke the timing belt coming back from Vegas to LA. After fixing the engine the mechanic told the owner that the timing belt will need to be adjusted in 3000 thousand miles. It has been 1500 miles since all the engine was fixed. I called the mechanic and He told me I should have adjusted the timing belt already. I am confused when do you need to have the timing belt reajusted?
Thank you for your help

That thread is more for the 12V engine. The 24V engine timing belt should always be tight and has no slack. If there's any slack (not adjusted correctly), it is VERY easy for the timing belt to jump tooth (or teeth) especially at the rear head. I believe this usually happens at cold start (on a cold day).

I would say a properly installed timing belt do not require adjustment for a long time. This could mean 15K, 20K or 30K depending how the car is used. Personally, I would check the belt condition of my own LS every 6 to 12 months (depending on situation) since "my own labor is cheap". If all the marks line up, the belt looks good and no "strange noise", I would leave it alone. I believe it is more important to re-check the timing belt "adjustment" very shortly (a few days or couple hundred miles) after it is installed to make sure everything is OK than to wait 3000 miles. Once the belt is properly adjusted and "locked" into place, things are not likely to change until some parts are due to be replaced (say at 30K intervals).

I suggest only take the car to a shop that is familiar with the 24V !

No need to adjust belt as mentioned.

The connectors that go into the fan can melt if the wires are shot.
I would replace the wiring where it is bad, make sure they did not splice together somewhere down the line. I may have a good used wire harness for the fan off a used car. Make sure to check 40amp fuse on firewall to make sure it did not blow as well.

Timing Belt must NOT be adjusted. It is to be installed as per the specified procedure and the automatic tensioner keeps the adjustment within spec for the life of the belt. An inspection after a few thousand miles might be useful, especially if the install was done by a mechanic who thinks these belts can be installed and then adjusted later. The purpose of the inspection would be to see if the belt was done correctly for purposes of suing the mechanic who didn't do so, before the limitation period expires! If the timing belt is out of adjustment a NEW timing belt and tensioner should be installed by someone who knows what he's doing IMMEDIATELY the fault is found. The accessory belt can be inspected and the tension re-set and since this is often replaced when the T Belt is done perhaps this is the belt the mechanic actually meant.
