Question Another transmission interuption

Just bought a 164 after admiring them from afar, now I am admiring from underneath ! Bought this one with a faulty auto transmission ( ZF HP18 ), thought it might be the valves but...always a BUTT.....It drives and changes up Ok for the first 2 miles then it slips and there is no drive. Turn it off and let it sit for 3 - 4 mins start her up and she goes OK for another 2 miles then slips again. It keeps going like this 2 miles 3 minutes off 2 miles. I thought what the heck I would strip it down anyway...but came across a receipt in the bundle of receipts that claimed the "2nd Clutch" was faulty..then WHY would it run then stop ??? On taking out the filter, that looked like it had never been taken out before, it was spotted with metal fillings..so something is very wrong. Already bought the overhaul kit..so we will see..in the meantime - Guesses ?

While I am at it whats the valve clearance on this 12V. Apart from that..its great !!!

I suggest you get a Saab 9000 Automatic transmission service manual 4:2 model 1985-95 order number 361097 English edition.

I got mine from Nat Wentworth at www.erikssonindustries.com

I also suggest you get 164 shop and wiring manuals which are on www.cardisc.com Alfa 164 12v CD.

164 12v valve clearances exhaust .225 to .250 mm (.0088 to .0098")
intake .475 to .500 mm (.0187 to .0197")
