Speedo sensor

Hi guys,

What are the usual signs of the speedo sensor going out? Mine works so randomly and nothing effects it. I have checked the wiring and it's good.

Thanks!

My speedo drops needle to peg once in awhile and then comes back after a bit and works for weeks on end before it does it again. Last winter on cold mornings it did it more often but since it works 99 44/100% of the time I haven't worried about it yet.

Hmmm, that's odd. See, mine isn't affected by road conditions or weather, it's just random. It works 8% of the time if I'm lucky. Should I try replacing? $80...

It is only money. See troubleshooting procedure in wiring diagiams for it. You should have 12v in and about 3.5 or 5v out as I remember and they want you to test S model with car on lift in gear and measure voltage and/or wavelenght on a scope.

A new speedometer sender solved my problem a long time ago.
Removal and installation speedometer sender is a bit tricky, and there isn't a lot of speace to work on. Don't over tighten.

How tight should these be? Also, will any voltage come out without the moving, but the car turned on?

It is a magnetic electric (sine wave signal?) generator turn by differential. A scope maybe able to pick up the signal but not measurable (too low average voltage) for multimeter. I don't know the torque specs, but just tight enough so it not come loose, It only grip a few very fine threads, so don't need to be too tight.

I think so, I was just trying to determine if it was auto or manual...
