164 Front tires chewing inside plastic mud cover

Both of my 164 front wheels can hit inside plastic mud cover when steering turn lock-to-lock. This is especially serious in 94 164LS with auto transmission because the transmission box is bigger than manual. The covers is also of very cheap design, The fit and finsih are horrible. No wonder they fitted US with very narrow tires to reduce the problem. If using bigger tire it is even more serious.
