That's what the plumbing diagram shows.

Thanks Alfisto Steve, Linda, and Nat for the valuable information.
Another 164 lives to see another day !!
I had this problem for about five years and finally made the above phone calls.
Nat overnighted the parts and both Stewarts from APC installed the spring with ease.
The transmission shifts flawlessly now, I should have done it years ago.
While generally a lurker, I have upgraded my account to Gold Subscriber to thank those mentioned.
I encourage others to upgrade as well.
Thanks again !!

Bruno transmission death
1989 model, 4 speed auto.
I know I should have changed the tranny fluid last year when I got the car (it was starting to turn black) but I was so happy I got it registered I just drove it.
Then, it started making a sharp noise with a clunk when changing up.
Then, one day when it was hot, it forgot how to change out of first but fixed itself.
Then, the other day, it forgot to change out of first until I backed off, then it lost drive altogether until stopped, when it found first again (drove home at 6000rpm which was kinda cool).
I'm not sure where to start - I guess I'll flush the fluid and change the filter first and see what happens - I have a new filter handy. It doesn't seem like it fits the failure modes detailed in this thread though - unless leaking governer seals would cause this problem (fingers crossed).

Hope all goes well for you but "thou shalt not forgo scheduled maintenance'.
Black fluid not a good sign.

Yeah, I hear you on the black fluid. If I was to take a guess, I'd say one of the clutches is burned out and the clutch material has gummed up a valve somewhere. Might be an opportunity for a 6 speed conversion :-)

Hmmm.
Drained 3.5l of filthy, black, not very slippery tranny fluid (not burnt smelling though). Poured in some Shell Dexron III on special at your local friendly K-Mart.
Test drive reveals: still busted.
What's my next step? I'm thinking that I will drain the fluid again, pull the filter out of the bottom and pop the top off to have a look at the easily reachable pieces as detailed further up in the thread. However, I think this transmission is stuffed and I'll need to source another one or rebuild it.
The craziest thought that went through my head was to yank the engine, buy a broken GTV6 and build a 3.0l road rocket, but I like this car too much. Anyone got a second hand tranny in oz they want to sell for cheap?

AT Running hot??
Hey guys I changed my tranny oil Saturday because the cooling fan when it came on it didnt turn off and I bypassed the thermo so oil always runs through cooler all the time. It doesnt heat the engine to much at all either so I was wondering that maybe I put the two sensor plugs on wrong sensor and need to switch them. I put the L shaped plug on bottom of thermo where big brass nut is and the straight plug on top. Is this right?? BTW the old fluid was pretty clean you know the normal wear and tear. But not brown or burnt really bad just the normal color of used tranny oil nothing out of the usual. But when I went to clean the filter it was pretty much full of crap looked like dirt or dust it was dark brown the oil itself was pretty clean. The Magnet had no metal shavings nothing just the usual stuff of when you wipe your finger on it your finger gets black. T he tranny itself shifts even smoother now that I changed fluid. I changed the fluid back in August of 2006 and added here and there because it has a little leak nothing big though just the usual little drops from old age no puddles though. Tranny runs great I was thinking of getting a bigger cooler for it to cool it down a little more but cant find the right AN fittings with the right NPT I measured the Plumbing Bolts and the O.D. measure is .545 counted the threads and it looks like it 14. I called Nat Wentworth at Erickkson Ind. He couldnt really tell me what the threads were. AAhh yea guys just a heads up Erikkson Ind. DOES NOT SUPPLY the pressure lines that go to the cooler. Its why Im trying to modify the cooler with aftermarket braided lines because the one on my car are old and leaky or always wet. If any of you guys can get that right AN fitting or the the NPT of that tranny thread it will be a big help. Also If I need to switch the sensor plugs please let me know. Thanks
