Sanden A/C compressor shaft seal info

The Sanden Rotary A/C compressors for early Alfa Spider SD-507, 86 GTV6, Milano and Late Series 3/4 Spiders Spider SD-508 Shorty and 164 SD-709 take same shaft seal whereas the 81-87 Fiat X1/9, 79-81 Brava and Lancia SD-508 uses a different one.

Not sure but I expect Fiat Spider uses SD-507 or SD-508 Shorty.

Here is picture of removal/installation tools and both style seals:

Notice used seal on right as I am out of new stock right now for Alfa compressors, wonder why since I no longer own any Fiats or Lancias.

My info on 164 forum:

Just ordered a couple more 52553 shaft seal assemblies for SD-709 and SD-508 shorty aka SD-507. I have a couple compressors with leaking shaft seals I hope to repair.

Some more info: http://www.digest.net/alfa/FAQ/164/f...mID2/4509.html

Hi Steve,

I have contacted those guys from WA and they said that they have shaft seal in stock along with the tools. He mentioned about two tools one to remove the seal and another one to install the seal. Are those the only two tools we need to replace the seal. I also asked him about the carbon shaft end seal that you mentioned on alfa digest, he said he is not aware of that kind of seal, is this seal different from shaft seal above or is it the same one??

thanks,
-Pavan

They may not think it is a spring loaded carbon seal with internal and external orings. It comes in 3 piece kit with felt wiper under that part number I listed and yes you need the two tools to remove and install seal.

As for clutch you need puller(s) I show to remove clutch plate and pulley so you can replace pulley bearing and shaft seal.

Be sure you line up flats in shaft seal metal housing with flats on crnakshaft when you go to insert seal into compressor body. It has to line up to engage correctly or it will break carbon seal. Use ester oil to lub seal before inserting.

I have puller tool and I replaced the bearing at the time when I got the car. So, I think I can keep using the same bearing. Will place the order for seal kit tomm.

thanks,
-Pavan.
