Brake parking lights

Hello

On my dash one day my brake and park light comes on when I brake. I thought that my rear lights didn't work. But they still do. I also found that when i brake the brake and parking light comes on the dash but when I put on the left or right signals the light comes off.

Has anyone had this problem. I have a 1991 164s 5speed in red. I love it.

Rear lamp control unit is ECU that interconnects turn signals and brake lights which both use same element in the 1157 bulb of which there are two in each rear tailight on NA spec 164 models.

When you say brake and park lamps come on what icons exactly are you saying come on?

The two red icon words BRAKE and PARK?

Classic failure symptoms for this unit. The black box version seems to be better made than the original white box. Some claim to have fixed the unit by re soldering the cracks in the connection paths on the circuit board. It is unlikely to be an external connection failure.

Re: N44, some have had success resoldering joints on the printed circuit board after opening it up (or replace it altogether if you can find one). Some have found a wire to come loose in the connector at N22, causing lights to not work. And then others have had success, cleaning and checking the function of the relay at the false firewall under the flimsy black cover near the wiper assembly. Investigate all those possibilities, but do check to see if your brake lights are actually working or not, most importantly. Another common fault is a corroded bulb socket/contact if your lights are not working and warning lights are flashing (as they should be in that case).
