Lenard,

Does computer have Windows XP operating system? If only two years old it should.

Is your cardisc version 2.0 or greater if so it will run on XP? But as Will states on next post if it is Version 2.0 you need XP patch from www.cardisc.com. Version 3.2 runs on XP without patch.

NOTE: IF IT IS VERSION 1.3 IT WILL NOT RUN ON XP EVEN WITH PATCH. The old version 1.3 will run on Windows 95/98 or earlier only..

As for that window that first comes up after you put CD in CD drive hit cancel and get rid of it. The CD drive is usually drive d.

Then hit windows key on keyboard or click on start button on screen, then hit R key or click on Run and in the run window screen type what CD drive you are using such as d:\164\setup.exe Now click on OK and follow directions to set up Cardisc icon.

Once program loaded, do the start thing again, hit All Programs, find 164 icon, right click on it and click on Send To and select Desktop (create shortcut) to send icon to desktop to put 164 icon on screen. Click on that 164 icon to start cardisc.

After first install you will use 164 icon on desktop to start cardisc.

Hi Lenard:
If Steve's good advice still doesn't get you up & running, your disc may require an XP patch available on line at www.cardisc.com
The following is from their website
Good Luck
Wil Painter

CarDisc International Ltd.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP Updates

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As some of you have notice when upgradeing to the Windows XP Operating System the CarDisc CD Version 2.0 does not load correctly.

The following software updates should allow you to enjoy your CarDisc CD on The Windows XP operating system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1 Click On The Link Below To Download A Self-Extracting Zip File Into An Folder On Your Computer

When Asked To Save Or Open, You Want To SAVE

Be Sure The Folder You Download To Has No Other Files In It

Be Sure You Remember The Folder On Your Computer That You Downloaded The File To

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2 Once The File Has Downloaded Onto Your Computer, Double Left Mouse Click On The File.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3 The Setup Program Will Run Automatically At The Conclusion Of The Extraction

When Prompted By The Setup Program, Accept All Defaults By Clicking On OK Or YES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When The Setup Program Has Finished, You Can Start The Program By Clicking
Start-->All Programs-->(Program Name)

You May Be Prompted By The Program To Enter Your CD Drive Name
(i.e. e:\)

Better Idea

This assumes you are using WinXP. After you install the "patch" discussed above, make a new directory on your hard drive named C:\164.

Next, with your 164 cardisc in your cd/dvd drive, right click "Start" and select "Explore." After about a minute, you should see your computer's top level file structure in the window on the left side of the screen. Rightclick on the drive with the 164 cardisk in it and go to the bottom of the pull down menu and select "properties." Click the boxes labled "hidden" and "archive" and click "OK." If you get an error message, just click OK again. You should get a bar that shows the computer applying the new properties to that disk.

Now back to the explorer window, navigate to the 164 directory on your cd/dvd. If your optical drive is D, then its "D:\164." You should see icons for all the files in this folder on this directory on the right side of the screen.

Go to the top of the page (just under the blue bar) and select "Edit" and pull down to "select all". All the file icons will be selected. Go to the bottom of the list and point at the very last file in the D:\164 directory and hold down the left mouse button. Drag and drop that file into the C:\164 directory (all the files above it will come too).

It will take several minutes for our computer to copy all the files to the C drive. Once this process is complete, start the cardisc program and tell it to run from C:\164. You have incredible speed and you don't need to find the cardisc (or remember which optical drive you put it in). You can put the cardisc cd somewhere safe and never have to get it out again.

This works with the disc for the 69 spider (you don't even need to click the hidden and archive files for this one -- at least I didn't) and the Milano/GTV-6 disc as well. For the Milano/GTV-6 disc, there are two separate directories, one for the Milano and one for the GTV-6. I can't say whether this trick works with any other cardisc, since these are the only ones I have.

One final trick: if you are worried about taking up too much space on the hard drive, you can right click the directory (C:\164) and select "properties" and then click the "advanced" box. By clicking the "compress files to save disc space", you can compress the files and save a bit of disc space. I haven't noticed any performance penalty as a result.

Good luck!

Smile Another idea

I use "Virtual CD" or "CD emulator"!

I make image files (ISO files) of the CD's that I have and leave them on the hard drive. Then I mount the image files as virtual CD's (appear with there own drive letters). Now I have access to several CD's at the same time and it is also much faster than reading from the physical CD's. They also work on across my home network too!

Most CD burning software can make ISO files. There're a few different virtual CD tools out there, I'm using Daemon Tools . Do a search on the internet and you should find some of these tools.

Rex, if you see 164 with MA plate around Albany area , it could be my son - he's now (mostly) in CT til the end of the year and will be back to Troy in January!

Contact Cardisc and ask if you can trade up.
And welcome to the 164 family!
