I have a good relationship with the shop owners. He actually isn't charging me for storage of the car right now, luckily! I also got a full diagnostic done on the car for $65 and those are all the problems he brought up. He also recommended that I get new suspension all around in the near future, but the control arms are my first and foremost concerns. Oh by the way, you have a Celica All-Trac? Very nice!

@ Alfissimo Int. The control arms listed on your website have the bushings included, correct? I'm going to go ahead and get them both done. I'll also get him to pull the injectors and send them for rebuild. I have run cleaner through the system. Also, the catalytic converter?

Due to rather lucky timing, my father is going out of town for a month and a half so I'll have a nice Volkswagen Golf TDI to drive while this work gets done. I was feeling really stressed out about all this, but thanks to Alfissimo for parts and all of the BBers for their input, I've shrugged it off and I've decided to turn this car back into the glorious machine she is, piece by piece.

You guys are saints. I'm learning from my experience, and now I'm going to make the most of the situation. Hey, at the end of the day...I've got an Alfa Romeo!

Don't get too discouraged. Once you get her back on the road fixed, you will be happy, the car itself, body wheels and interior seem nice, so thats a plus.

Yes, control arms come with all bushings or I have bushings to use in existing arms as well.
Just e-mail/call (480-858-9156) me and I can help you.

Yes, you make a good point, yes now you do have an alfa and I nice one at that. Fix it and have fun. Welcome to the club.
Thanks
Jason

I think they do. I just had a customer get his done about 5 months ago.

Worth a shot.

I would get it running right again and see if the cat comes back to life again before shelling out the cash for a new one. There is really no way to tell if a cat converter is good or bad unless you have the engine running as it should, unless it's clogged.

Ok so they know what they are doing thats good to hear. I do have a All-trac it is a cool car I have been looking for one for years. I had four 323 GTXs and a vr4 Galant but being that I am a EX Toyota tech I have been on the look out for one and now I have it. Back to the 164 fix it and enjoy it the LSs are good/fun cars. I have the same wheels on my 94 LS.

I know the catalytic converter was installed recently because I have the invoice for the part purchase and installation.

The diagnostic states:

Catalytic converter does not have efficient temperature change.
O2 sensor - no voltage fluctuation. Stuck rich.

Yes, I know he has the cat installed because I got it for him. Change O2 sensor as CAT was fine.

Of course it's "stuck rich" your dumping unburned fuel onto it from the injectors.
And... how can you test that the cat converter is working right when the car doesn't run right?
Get it running the way it is supposed to run, change the oil( if the injectors are dumping fuel it will get past the rings and get into the crank case) drive it for a day or two and see if the things wake up.
It takes quite a bit of time to test all of this stuff. Is you mechanic just assuming these things are bad or has he gone through the proper procedures for testing these things.
Ask him how he is testing the cat converter...

He did a temperature and back pressure test. There was only 20 degrees of temperature difference when there should be closer to 100 degrees. It seems as if the cat is working about as well as a straight pipe now.

Speaking of which, I still need to locate a catalytic converter. I'm skeptical about getting a Magnaflow one since it would have to be welded in.

If you live in an area that doesn't test for emissions don't give a dead cat another thought. All it's doing is cleaning up the exhaust emissions. If it's clogged it will make the car run bad (you know... "I ain't fallin for the old banana in the tail pipe trick" ) Get a set of euro pipes (Jason?) and you'll be golden.

There are some parts of Georgia that don't test for emissions however I live in a county that does, so this stuff will have to get taken care of.

A friend of mine told me he managed to bribe a guy to pass his car, but I don't want to resort to that!

Bribe=prison....
Just get her running right and see if some of this stuff clears up. You can the get the safety stuff done after the running issues are done. The cat converter may be a non issue. My old '75 Volvo 164ES with a hot cam, bored 60 over, the block decked, the head milled and big valves would blow almost 0's at the emission test station when we had the tests here. The inspectors would have to look to see if the exhaust was hooked up all the way. I had no cat converter with a straight pipe and a flowmaster. It's all how it runs. Of course here in Ky a car of a certain age that came with a cat was supposed to have one on it but if it passed the tests there wasn't anything they could do to make you put one on. Take care of the overfueling issue drive the piss out of it(change the oil as I said) and see how it goes.
Baby steps.
