Steve, I was thinking about the exaust. The whining noise sounds almost like a turbo winding up except a bit louder and more annoying The manifolds look good but I haven't checked the braided section. Is there an easy test for this? I have felt for leaks with my hand but that's obviously only going to find a big one.

Paul, I don't have any history on the seals but the ones I've changed (all tranny and rear crank) all looked stock and origional. Where is the thrust washer? is it on the outside of the block under the crank pully?

As for the crank bearings, I've been pretending that is not possible

Crank shaft thrust washers are in rear main bearing cap and control end play in crankshaft.

If crankshaft moves in and out when pushing in clutch if 5 speed or just floats in and out then they are out of tolerance.

Well the noise isn't related to the cluch pedal so I hope this is not the case. I really don't like the idea of having to rebuild the engine. The car overall is in great shape and the former owner keep it very well serviced. I'm quite sure the car wasn't pushed all that hard either so I'm hoping it is something simple like the exaust.

Probably something like an electronic sniffer used to find a/c freon leaks maybe.
