The CO.ME clutch kit I got from Alfissimo has been great. Go whole hog and get an entire kit and have the flywheel machined or it will still chatter. These things do not have a pilot bearing so don't let IAP sell you one! (or an alignment tool!)

Thanks Charles, ya I'm going to do the whole kit + flywheel + seals + tranny input bearing. There's no sense half-assing it if you are going to the trouble of pulling the tranny out!

Sounds good. A link to the clutch company if you have never heard of it. :Come s.r.l. - clutch service - home page This thing has resulted in the lightest clutch pedal I have experienced in this car.

The transmission bearing failure is of the inner ball cage, which allows the ball bearings to run free and clump up on one side of the bearing. Nasty loss of transverse position control. Boxarox

The squeal/whistle you hear -- could possibly be a throw-out bearing noise. Is there any chance it could be a whining water pump shaft seal? You said you checked the belts, but did you leave off the power steering belt to check the P.S. pump? I've had whiny serpentine belt tensioner bearings, but you seem to say you've checked for that.

Oh. silly me both for knowing this and for asking you. (I heard this on both an '80s Spider and a '60s Volvo.) Is your 5-speed transmission -really- low on lubricating fluid? That dip-stick is inconvenient enough to access that some otherwise intelligent folks will put it off too long. But if you hear the squeal while the car is sitting and idling next to you, this shouldn't be the problem.

Michael

I did remove the power steering belt and still got the same noise as well as the serpintine belt So I figure the pump bearings are ok. The throwout bearing seems like it would make a very similar noise but would it not come on and off as you press the cluch? That's what it used to do n my GTV6 at least The tranny fluid level is good but it's always smart to check the simple things first!

I'm kind of at the stage where I'm just ging to start replacing the things that are worn or suspect (cluch, all betls/tensioners, water pump, tranny input bearing...) and hope that either fixes it or helps me find the problem while I'm pulling everything apart.

I do have one question though, what's the pully just under the rear cam pully that is also spun by the t-belt? My shop manual hasn't arrived yet

Thanks, Graeme

It's the oil pump drive. On the Milano/GTV-6 it also drives the dizzy.

My 164 had a noise just as you describe, turned out to be the heater fan!

Braking or accelerating must have put pressure on the bearing.

Well after lots and lots of work on the car.........the noise is still there

So, it's not from any belt or pully (incl timing belt and tentioner) as they are all new. Nothing to do with the cluch as it's new. Not the tranny bearing. Not the blower motor. It's comming from the engine bay but it almost sounds worse near the rear of the bay. It's louder from underneath than above as well but I can't pinpoint the source even with tubes in my ears. Still only happens under acceleration or deceleration but I can get it to happen if I play with the throttle in the garage while in neutral so it's not a driveline issue either.

I'm running out of parts to consider! I guess my next move is to find a shop that will let me put it up on the hoist with a guy in it so I can hang out underneath and try and narrow down the source. Wish me luck.

Graeme

p.s. I put in one of the Alum. rads that Jason get made up, for those who haven't seen one it's a work of art!

Gotta love those long-term puzzles!

Have you tried taking off and resealing the chrome intake tubes yet... nothing to lose if you're careful not to cross-thread the bolts

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the intakes. The noise is just too loud to be from a vacuum leak and I've had my ear pretty close to the tubes and that doesn't seem to be where the noise is comming from. It also changes pitch with engine rpm so vacuum doesn't totally fit with that either. I'm sure it's going to end up being something super simple that I've over looked and I'm going to look like a total idiot

Have you ruled out crack(s) in exhaust flex joints under wire braid? Or have they been replaced with one(s) that doesn't have inner liner?

Did anyone install any seals with silicone? I have seen it smoosh out and rub a pulley or flywheel and make a screeching noise. You may also consider a thrust washer on the crankshaft. It will make a noise that changes with the clutch actuation. A bad crank bearing will squeal when it's bad. (usually before the engine locks up )
