Front 164 engine mount/Saab 9000 mounts

Well I installed an AlfaBill modified Saab mount today. My oil filled 164 mount had ruptured and oil was gone mostly into wheel wheel and sub frame area.

I had to use later model Saab mount he had partially cut down center alignment area around center bolt hole for attachment bolt as other one for earlier Saab has a stud with larger diameter than the 164 so it wouldn't fit hole in engine bracket unless I drilled out hole in bracket.

I also had to remove plate off top of later Saab mount and cut off tabs flush so 164 engine would set low enough in front for rear timing belt cover to clear dog bone mount.

I may order a couple more Saab mounts (aftermarket ones) to see it they are same design. It seems not all Saab mounts are created equal.

I wonder if I can modify earlier Saab mount (one at left) by cutting off stud flush with top of mount face and tapping a bolt hole in it? If so it maybe the mount to use as it is lower than later model one.

Well, it is not that Saab mounts are cheap but when compare to factory replacement mounts they are bargains ! The factory front mounts are ~$280 where as the Saab mounts are ~$60.

Below is a picture of the Saab mount before I put it in. The Saab mount is higher. I took off all the metal plates and cut away the tab/key to make it flush. Then I got an appropriate size stud/bolt that has the right thread for the hole to secure the engine to the mount.

I see you have 24v timing belt idler pulley on your 12v for serpentine belt, too or is picture of your 24v?

I also removed top plate and tab to get it low enough to install and rear timing belt cover just cleared dog bone upper body mount.

I wonder if I had a new rear mount if it would raise rear of engine some. I had a hard time getting dog bone with poly bushings on both ends back in place. If it does it would even be harder to get dog bone installed.

I see the mount I used like yours had threaded hole already in it. The other Saab mount I got from Bill via my friend who didn't use it is lower but has stud which is to big in diameter to fit into engine bracket unless you drill out hole.

So neither Saab mount is really ready to use on 164 without some modification.

It is my 24V (now that I look closer)! I changed both the front (Saab) and rear (factory unit) about a year ago. It was a tight fit to get the old front mount out and new one in (hole was not quite align). For those of you who are going to do this, watch the top radiator hose area when jacking the engine up - you don't want to damage the hose or radiator (I was close).

I think Alfa had beefed up the dogbone mount bracket at the chassis for later cars (like my 24v). It is harder (tighter fit) to install the dogbone big end in the bracket on the 24V than the 12V.

Also, the poly bushing has more material (as least the version that I got) that restricts how much the big mount can pivot. Below is a picture showing what I did to mine to allow more movement and make it easier to slide it in. The bushing is too hard and transmit too much engine vibration so I took it out. I drilled some holes through it to attempt to "weaken" it. I might try this mount again on my 91L Verde since the mount on that car is no good.

I will have to test drive mine to see if new style 2-piece yellow poly bushing I used which has three (3) relief slots in each piece is soft enough to allow engine to move without transmitting vibrations to chassis. I may have to cut off edges of poly bushing since it does not press flush with metal of dog bone.

Some years ago I tried solid poly like you have shown but it was too harsh.

Yes, I modified it more by shaving off rest of protrusion so engine bracket would lie flat on mount and rear timing belt cover would not hit on chassis mount for upper dog bone.

Drove car 50 miles today and all is well with new Saab modifed mount and poly bushings in both ends of dog bone upper mount.

I removed upper steel plate that is held on by two small countersunk screws and then sawed/filed rest of protusion flush with top of mount around center bolt hole to try and get front of engine low enough as mount is higher than 164 mount. Later aftermarket Saab mount is solid rubber versus rubber with oil dampening of OEM 164. I think some Saab mount are oil dampened too but also pricey like 164.

Here is mount I remodified as shown at this site http://www.eeuroparts.com
is like one I got from AlfaBill

Here is other mount I have that is in picture that maybe oil filled for earlier Saab 9000 and stud is larger than than 164.

just seems a bit bleak buying a modified mount and having to modify it, sort of defeats oblective
which makes me think there must be differences and it does fit some 164`s?

Well things evolve and maybe now others have learned how to modify Saab mounts like Bob and I that we needed to cut top of mount flush.

I believe Jason in Arizona had a couple of threads about this last year. Do a search. I followed his instructions to end up doing the same, ie, cut everything flush.

Yes, it is super easy.
You can buy the aftermarket Saab mount cut down the metal flush with the bushing and re-tap it. Use a nice large washer and bolt it in.
Saves you tons of money and a better result than OE. No need to buy a modified one from the other guy when you can do it your self and save a bunch of Money!
I have them modified for $90. If there are folks you dont have the tools to modify them.
