Exclamation No brakes!

The wife and both our boys got in to one of our 164's that she has been using for a work/commute car for the last week and the brake pedal went to the floor without any warning! I will have to have a look at it and see whats up. She drove the car to work last night (10:00) and home this morning (7:00) without any problem and now this. Thank god she is a good alert driver and no one was hurt.

Had this happen shortly after I got my 164 the last day of college (almost 9 years ago now.) Car was packed to the gills ready to go. I went out to run an errand and the pedal sunk! A few hours later it was working better, but still didn't trust it so I had it towed home (with all my stuff in it...) Ended up being the master cylinder.

Well I had a look at it and the brakes worked fine for me. Upon further inspection I found that the throttle was sticking very badly. I removed the cover on the throttle body and found the screw that holds the kick down cable? had fell out and was just sitting there but that was not my problem the throttle cable was sticking inside its plastic housing. I lubed it real good with some white lithium grease spray and all is fine. I also replaced a few bulbs that were bad on the car 2 body marker lights, a fog light, fixed the passenger front power window regulator that was bad, took the wheels, off had a look at the pads and they were fine rotated the tires, and topped off the fluids. Oh and I replaced the power mirror switch that was bad. Its ready to back to work.

The last pic is of the shop full of Alfas

So your theory is, your brakes overheated from the stuck throttle?

I lightened up the pic, so we could see what your up to.

Nice! Thanks Charles the camera phone pics kinda bite. Oh and that's just 7 of the 10 that I have collected this winter. The other 3 are at the house getting miles put on them.

The last stuck throttle I've experienced was on a '68 Ford Ranchero, the throttle and tranny kickdown linkage was a "reverse the action and then re-reverse the action" affair of rods. I replaced it with a straight rod, installed new springs and it never stuck again.

I've gotta find more indoor storage space at $0 per sq ft. Got any ideas? Even though this place has big driveway, the garage only holds two 164s. My wife had me make her a living room out of our other house's one car garage.

As for the brake issue she thought we had a brake problem with daughter's 164b w/AT when she first drove it, too because our Jeep does not have engine braking when AT downshifts like the 164 does when going into lower gears. At least no stuck partially open throttle issue.

No it just stuck open and she thought it was the brakes.

OK. It's mid-winter (alright, it's California mid-winter). When my daughter's car had brake M.C. failures, it was mid-winter both times. Low temps seemed to be correlated with M.C. failure. Maybe the hydraulic seals contract more than the metal and lose the seal to the wall? I don't know. But I'd expect anyone to know the difference between the brakes not working and the engine running hard from a stuck-open throttle. Was it just not -that- far stuck open? Seems a stretch. I assume you checked the fluid levels, too? My son had a clutch failure from lack of fluid. Snuck up on him because of a leaky slave cylinder coupled with a non-functional brake fluid level sensor. Check that puppy, too, for your loved ones' cars. They don't always know to look. And I keep getting reminded that I ought to have a schedule for checking everyone's cars, as I'd rather pay attention than have them suffer such failures.

Michael
