Headlight's wont turn off

I Turn on the car, they turn on, i turn off the car, they turn off. How can i turn them off while the car is on or on just the first click of the keyturn in the ignition? Pressing the button on the dash does nothing for me.

Hmm, has it been like that since you got the car? Which button did you pressed (those are for the fog lights)? You suppose to rotate the turn signal stalk/lever to turn the headlights on or off!

Unless perhaps you have a Canadian model that has daylight driving light !?!

You rotated the steering wheel lever "1" in picture "b", right?

Ok, perhaps you have to change some wiring(s)!

Check that Fuse Box G1 pin 5 is controlled by Turn Lever Switch B4 pin 4 and not always "hot in run".

Where is this fuse-box located?

The main fuse box is under the driver side dash. Loosen the retaining bolt (by hand) that is right below the steering column then pull the entire lower dash cover down and you'll see the fuse box (and the spagetti wirings that might discourage most people ) .

Although it is nice to have the option to turn the headlights off, you might want to just leave things as is. It is safer since other people can see you coming (and get out of the way )! ! I usually turn my headlights on when the visibility is reduced - overcast days or on a tree lined side street under a bright sun!

I'd like to be able to turn my lights off driving up to my girlfriends house to sneak her out ;-)

If your car has daytime running lights then they come on automatically when the car is started, in gear (automatic) and the park brake released. If you want to turn them off while driving then you can cheat the system for sneaking about.

While driving pull the parkbrake up high enough to switch them off, but not too hard to brake the car or you will overheat them.

Did Alfa have daytime running lights in 91?

I guess you could always pull the fuse for the lights, but that could cause other problems...

Hi Sean, I'm not sure of this fact but I don't think so. We never had this in South Africa & I moved to Canada 7 yrs ago. I think it became mandatory around 96 or so, and I stand corrected.

My comment really was a way of cheating the running lights if equipped. I have never owned a 164 but I'm sure present & past owners will let us know.

I like them and am thinking of a way of wiring my GTV6 to run with them. In Vancouver they come in handy with the weather we have here.

The wiring diagram is how US cars are wired. I don't know how exactly they wire up the Canadian daylight driving light. Assuming the light switch B4 is the same and is functional, my guess is that they added a jumper wire which is "hot in run" (indicated by either the red or the orange wire) to energize the left and right low beam relays.

To test whether you can use your existing B4 switch, you need to open up the steering wheel cover to get to the connector. I am guessing that right now pin 4 on B4 (my blue but actually gray wire) always gets 12V when you turn the key on. You want to change this pin 4 to be controlled by turning the switch. So, if either the red wire (at the fusebox side) or the orange wire (at the switch side) exists then you have to cut it (and tape it). You also have to make sure the blue wire is there.

Another easier solution (but non-factory) is to add an additional switch. In this case, locate the yellow circle at the fusebox. Cut the wire and connect a switch in between.

Bob
