Racing is the way for me, such a big difference when driving around a track solo and if you have someone to chase, being chased or both!
I'd love an engine and gearbox like the one in the video, set up for racing.

Autocrossing IMO is also a lot less stress - on the car and myself worrying about crashing. If I spin at an autox, I might take out a couple cones and need to polish my bumper. If I do the same at the track, I might lose the car to a tire wall.
As for the standing around... yes, there is a lot of standing around but that can also depend on what club you are running with. Some clubs will have you out there all day. Others will run split heats where you work 1/2 of your heat and drive the other half so you don't have to stay the entire day. If I'm going to the track, I'm getting up much earlier and getting home even later than if I showed up to help setup and stayed through tear down at any local autocross (but I would get a lot more seat time).
The truth is they are two completely different sports and comparing them really isn't fair. You might have one or two local tracks within a few hours of your house that you can regularly go to but autocrosses are a lot more common (and closer) and the course design changes every week. I like the fact I have to learn a new course for every event.
It really depends on what you like. As for me... I'll be at the track this weekend and two weekends later I'll be at an autocross. It's going to be a busy month.
